5. How come I am not receiving the email-delivery logs?

Make sure you use your ISP's SMTP host for SpyAgent's SMTP host, and use your ISP email address as the Send From and Send To fields in SpyAgent's Email Delivery setup. For example, if you are using MSN as your provider, you would use smtp.mail.msn.com as your SMTP host, with your msn.com email address as the send from/send to address!

You can lookup your ISP's SMTP host yourself by doing the following (if you cannot find it in your email client settings):

1. Run nslookup.exe (usually located in your c:\windows folder)
2. Type 'set type=mx' (no quotes
3. Type your ISP domain name (ie: for America Online you will enter aol.com, for Earthlink you would enter earthlink.com)
4. Look for the 'mail exchanger' line that will appear - this is the SMTP host for your ISP.

6. How do I know how long an application has been in use?

By viewing the Application Active Usage Log you can tell how long applications have been actively used by users - rather than how long they were just sitting in the background not being used at all.

7. Why is my Windows folder gone after installing SpyAgent?

Your windows folder is only hidden now - you can view it by going to Folder Options in explorer and enabling the 'view hidden files' option.

9. I click on “Stop SpyAgent Stealth Mode” but nothing happens!

If you click on this and nothing happens, that means SpyAgent is not running in stealth mode. It may be in active mode, but it is not in stealth mode. To bring up the main SpyAgent screen, click on the SpyAgent icon in the task bar (by the time/date).

13. SpyAgent gives me an error with SYSTEMSA32.DLL?

Reinstalling SpyAgent will fix this problem. Please make sure you disable any antispyware/antivirus software when installing.

14. SpyAgent is in my Control Panel - How do I get rid of it?

You can remove SpyAgent from the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel either by using the 'Remove from Control Panel' feature in the SpyAgent's options menu, or by choosing not to include an installer while installing SpyAgent.

15. Why is SpyAgent not logging my AIM chats?

You are most likely using an AIM add-on. These add-ons often interfere with how SpyAgent records AIM conversations and will render SpyAgent's AIM logging useless. To work around this either uninstall the AIM add-on software, or use ScreenSpy and key logger features.

16. Why is SpyAgent not logging my incoming/outgoing mails?

First, make sure you have the email logging option turned on in SpyAgent's logging options. Second, if you are on dialup this feature will not operate - it is only usable by users with 'always-on' internet connections (ie: dsl, cable, network connections). Third, make sure you are using POP3/SMTP emails - webmail (like Hotmail) is not logged by the email logging feature in SpyAgent (webmail is logged separately, in the website content logs).

17. I have SpyAgent set to monitor all users, but it only monitors me?

This is probably happening because the log location you are using for SpyAgent's log storage is not set to full read/write access for all users of your computer. Make sure the log location has full access for all users - and also make sure you have 'load on Windows startup for all users' enabled in SpyAgent's startup options.

To set a folder to full read/write access in Windows XP right click on the folder, click on "Properties", then "Security" within the properties window. Once there, make sure all users and groups have full read/write access set.

18. I use the hotkey to access SpyAgent, but nothing happens?

SpyAgent is probably not running. Double click the SpyAgent icon in its installation folder to restart it. Be sure to click 'Start Monitoring' again next time you stop monitoring, to ensure it stays running. If you exit the software, it will no longer be monitoring.

19. Should I uninstall the trial version before installing the full version?

Yes, you should remove the trial version first before installing the full version to ensure there are no conflicts between the two versions, and that the two copies are not running simultaneously on your computer.

20. Some Spyware Detectors pick up and try to disable SpyAgent, help!

Good news! This can be prevented. Make sure you have 'Disable Spyware Detectors' enabled in SpyAgent's Security settings (click on the advanced tab on SpyAgent's user interface). If this does not do the trick make sure you have SpyAgent's latest Spyware Detectors Database installed. To do this simply run the update installer located HERE.

SpyAnywhere Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find common questions about our SpyAnywhere software.

1. How do I use SpyAnywhere?
2. How do I access SpyAnywhere on the remote PC?
3. How secure is SpyAnywhere?
4. What is the minimum configuration that is able to run SpyAnywhere?
5. How do I get the IP address of the PC if it is on dialup, or if the IP changes regularly?
6. Who will have access to SpyAnywhere?
7. How do I access my remote PC if it is behind a firewall?
8. How do I access my remote PC if it is on a network?
9. I always get a "cannot find server" error when trying to access SpyAnywhere!

1. How do I use SpyAnywhere?

You need to install SpyAnywhere on the remote machine you wish to monitor. Once installed configure SpyAnywhere to load on Windows startup in Listening mode - this will ensure that SpyAnywhere is always running!

2. How do I access SpyAnywhere on the remote PC?

Simply point your browser to http://remote_ip or http://workstation_name (where remote_ip is replaced by the actual IP of the remote computer, and workstation_name would be the workstation name of the remote computer) and enter your SpyAnywhere password in the login area. Once logged in you will have full access to the remote PC!

3. How secure is SpyAnywhere?

SpyAnywhere is secure as you want it to be. SpyAnywhere can be configured to filter IP addresses so only certain IP addresses are allowed access to SpyAnywhere. Make sure you choose a unique IP address for SpyAnywhere as well! You can choose to limit access as well to SpyAnywhere by disabling features that you do not want to be used remotely - such as remote file system browsing.

4. What is the minimum configuration that is able to run SpyAnywhere?

All you need for SpyAnywhere is a Windows machine. It does not require a web server, since SpyAnywhere is its own HTTP server. The only thing you need to have running on the machine is TCP/IP.

5. How do I get the IP address of the PC if it is on dialup, or if the IP changes regularly?

You can configure SpyAnywhere to deliver the IP address via email every time the IP changes - just use the IP Delivery Via Email feature!

6. Who will have access to SpyAnywhere?

The only user that will have access to the SpyAnywhere software, locally or remotely, is you - or whoever you give the access password and ip address to. SpyAnywhere cannot be terminated locally without your administrator password. You can also configure SpyAnywhere so only certain IP addresses can access the server.

7. How do I access my remote PC if it is behind a firewall?

The easiest way to access a computer that is protected by a firewall is to map one of the firewall's ports to SpyAnywhere's port (default is port 80).

For example:
FIREWALL IP address: 172.120.0.1
SpyAnywhere machine: IP address: 172.120.0.10, Port: 1000

In this case, you should pick a port on the firewall (say, 4000) and map it to 172.120.0.10:1000
Having done the above, you will be able to access the computer with the URL http://172.120.0.1:4000

8. How do I access my remote PC if it is on a network?

If the remote computer is on a network, and SpyAnywhere is already installed, you can either access it externally from the network, or locally on the network. If you are on the same network, then just enter in http://workstation_name, or http://ip_address into your browser to view the computer. However, if you are outside of the network you will have to enable port forwarding on the network router to let you access the machine. Please see Question 7 above for more information on port forwarding.

9. I always get a "cannot find server" error when trying to access SpyAnywhere!

This could happen for a few reasons.

  • The SpyAnywhere server is not running - confirm it is running in listening mode on the computer you want to access.
  • The IP or computer name you are using is incorrect.
  • You are using the external IP for the computer, but it is on a network and you do not have port forwarding enabled (see questions 7 and 8 above)
  • You are using the internal IP (network IP) for the computer, when you should be using the external (make sure port forwarding is enabled)
